Settling In (Part 2)
As you can imagine, there are a lot of major adjustments that are required for our Ukrainian family starting life in Canada. Nataliia and Vladyslav and Yaroslav are doing amazingly well since their arrival on May 18.
The boys got started in school, if only for a brief time. They got involved with soccer and jujitsu and are now attending day camp at the Kawartha BCG club. They are grateful to Donna and David Chatland for driving them to camp in the morning and to Denham and Joanne Dingle for offering to pick them up.
Nataliia has made several visits to the Career Centre and to date we’ve put in job applications to two companies. Getting a job is at the top of her priority list as she wishes to work toward a time when she will be a bit more independent and able to eventually meet her goal of finding a place of her own. She is also working on getting her drivers license here. The family is able to connect via video chat with Nataliia’s husband each day but they desperately wish he could come here to join them.
Jane Avery is doing a fabulous job offering English as a Second Language to Nataliia and one other Ukrainian mom, six hours each week at the church.
Some folks have inquired about how the Outreach Committee have made use of the monies that have been donated to support the family. This list is by no means exhaustive but contains some of the spending items to date:
Summer clothes for Mom and boys (since they left their home in Kharkiv in February they only had heavy clothing).
Groceries and phone and hydro support for Marnie.
Partial tuition for Camp Kawartha.
Second hand bikes including locks and bike helmets.
Proposed driving lessons once Nataliia passes her test.
Lunch bags, backpacks and assorted school supplies.
On the social side, the Skerratt’s have taken them to visit Margaret Jean Watson to enjoy the farm and especially the horses. They also went berry picking and the story goes that Nataliia and Vladyslav ate more than they picked! Nataliia has formed a network with the other Ukrainian families living here and that has proven very important to all involved.
Thanks to all of you once again for your support and generosity.

View From Above…
After the major wind storm we experienced on May 21, our maintenance volunteers could tell that something was wrong with the horns of the carillon. John Coombs, Henk Reinders, and Phillip Bartlett (Jim & Keatha’s son) went up to the crown, with Ron Hutchinson and Jim Bartlett staying at the bottom. They discovered that some of the horns were not pointing in the right direction because the steel frame that they are attached to had come loose from the roof with only one screw remaining. A few days later, Merlin Leney went up and properly anchored the frame for the horns. At a later date, John Coombs and Henk Reinders went back up to the crown and finished securing and painting the frame. Finally, John, Henk, Ron and Jim removed the ladder and closed the hatch. All set in the event of another storm!
Original St. Andrew’s Pews
There are some old pews from St. Andrew’s Church that have been stored on a member’s property. If anyone wishes to save and restore these pews, we have until September 1st to retrieve them. They date back to 1886 when the old church was built.
The pews could be cut into smaller seats such as single or love seats. They are curved & originally from the centre section on the main floor.
