ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH 40-DAY FAST

The season of Lent, which begins on Feb. 22, 2023, is forty days extending from Ash Wednesday through the Saturday before Easter. Sundays are not considered part of Lent.

Often during this season, many engage in fasting. Some fast from technology, or a meal. Others fast by not purchasing anything besides food. Some engage in acts of kindness or give regularly to a food bank.

At St. Andrew’s, we’re in a season of renewal and transition, and we need God’s presence in a special way; we need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, St. Andrew’s Church will engage in fasting and praying together. The discipline of fasting is to take the time we would normally eat to spend in prayer and Scripture reading. There are many examples of people in the Bible who fasted: the Ninevites after hearing Jonah's prophecy of doom (Jon. 3:7); David when his son was close to death (2 Sam. 12:16); Jesus when he was tempted (Matt. 4:2); and Paul after meeting Christ on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:9).

As a church, we will fast for 40 days together by signing up to do a one-day, 24-hour, fast. We will have a calendar posted in the Great Hall for you to put your name on the date you will fast on behalf of the whole church. You may drink water, black coffee and tea. During the fasting, we ask that you pray for the church: for renewal, for spiritual growth, for a new minister, and so forth.

If you have any health concerns, we ask that you not sign up, and provide support by praying Regularly.

Blessings, Rev. Linda

BOOTS & SHOES for KIDS

l’d like to thank St. Andrew’s congregation for their overwhelming support of the boot/shoe project for King Albert School. We were able to purchase 13 pairs of boots and 6 pairs of running shoes. The school was very appreciative and I am overwhelmed by our giving spirit. Serving others has always been a priority at St. Andrew’s.

The first Session will begin with repentance, acknowledging the harm done by homophobia and hypocrisy in the church.

MARY MARTHAS

Our Mary Martha group originated about 59 years ago when a group of young moms met socially with others in their church family. Over time, they participated in money making projects helping with church expenses.

Presently, we are a group of women who meet on the second Monday of every month at 7pm in U1 excluding July and August.

Two members sign up for a meeting and are responsible for the devotional, prayer, lunch and occasional guest speaker.

We do set up for Remembrance Day and decorate the church and hall for Christmas.

With the help of the other women’s groups we had a very successful Tea, Luncheon and Bake Table this past December. In the past, we have had rummage sales and convened the Good Friday Breakfast. We hope to have a Breakfast again this year if we get enough volunteer help.

We have already scheduled a Fashion Show for April 28 with two awesome stores participating. The money we make helps us provide for specific needs of our church and community outreach.

We welcome new members.

Please contact Cathy Campbell or Merilyn Junkin for more details if interested. Their contact information can be obtained by calling the church office.

On Sunday March 5, we will celebrate Holy Communion. If you are worshiping at home, please have your elements ready.
