Minister’s Message

Rev. Linda & her granddaughter Autumn

There’s something restful and reassuring knowing there’s a rhythm to the seasons. Spring is quickly ending, and summer is just around the corner, even though it felt like summer recently with 25+ degree temperatures.

I read in a blog: “Creation follows a sustainable rhythm, year after year, but we charge on in cycles of our own making: productivity, busyness, stress, burnout.” If we are created in the image of our Creator, and if God rested on the seventh day, why do we think we can bypass living in the rhythm of work and rest? And yet we do continually.

Many of us break the fourth commandment, which is: “Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy. Do all your work in six days. But the seventh day is a sabbath to honour the Lord your God. Do not do any work on that day. The same command applies to your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and your animals. It also applies to any outsiders who live in your towns. In six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea and everything in them. But he rested on the seventh day. So the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exodus 20:8-11).

If you were to break other commandments such as do not steal or do not murder, it would not be acceptable. In fact, you would be prosecuted because breaking those commandments is actually a crime. However, in our technologically-driven, fast- paced culture, it seems that breaking the fourth is a “have-to” to keep up.

The Sabbath rest is much more than taking a break from work. (Read Hebrews 4.) However, it does help to begin with rest, enjoyment and play.

Summer is a great time for rest and play. Longer days and warmer weather are great settings for relaxation and recreation. I hope you will make the most of our short Canadian summer and enjoy the beauty of creation, engage deeply in your important relationships, and be playful.

Yours in Christ,

Linda Park
