Minister’s Message
I’m writing this on Mother’s Day afternoon after returning from our in-house worship service that I shared with 80 plus brothers and sisters in Christ, a joyous and uplifting worship celebration. My theme for the morning was “Why I Believe” based on the story of Hannah and baby Samuel from 1 Samuel chapter one. I used that story to talk about the 4 reasons that helped me be and survive as a believer. The 4th one was “a supportive, nurturing church fellowship”.
I was reminded of how pivotal to my faith walk and my emotional, mental and spiritual health being connected to a church family has been. For more than 7 decades now, “at church” has been a very significant part of my spiritual life, health and growth. The sad truth is that less and less people think attending one or being a part of one is important. “I can be a good person and love and serve God and people without it.” Post Covid, church growth experts suggest that up to 40% of regular church goers may never return to Sunday morning worship services.
My 10-year-old grandson loves LEGO, and I enjoy putting LEGO sets together with him. You know what I discovered? Each LEGO brick has no purpose on its own unless it’s connected to others. Disconnected, they’re just a pile of plastic. But when you connect them, you can build just about anything you can imagine. Paul says in Romans 1:12 “When we get together, I want to encourage you i n your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours”.
That’s why we belong to the church—so God’s people can say together, “your faith will help me, and my faith will help you”. I simply want to affirm that we need the church. As families and individuals, we need that network, that community of faith that strengthens, nurtures and supports us all in all of the circumstances of our lives.
“I rejoiced when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1
Blessings, Rev. Bob
Summer Bag Lunch Program
Your Outreach and Missions ministry team is planning once again to offer a bag lunch program to those in need. As we have all seen and heard, the issues of homelessness and mental illness continue to be serious problems in our community. We know from speaking with our current soup kitchen and Sunday supper guests that finding even a room to rent is exceptionally difficult and in some cases, almost impossible.
During the last two years of the pandemic, the program was highly successful and met the needs of many people in our community. Bag lunches will be prepared in the kitchen and served at the door for those who attend. Lunches will be offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:30 to 12:30 during the months of July and August.
We are asking that you seriously consider volunteering to help support this initiative. You need not commit to both months but perhaps might be able to volunteer on one day a week for one of the months identified above. Please email Dianne Dalton at tinypaddler@icloud.com or call the church office to indicate your interest.
Thank you for considering this request.
