Worship Ministry

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church celebrated 175 years of existence in 2010.   We have a long active worship history as a mid-sized downtown church.  We welcome visitors and new members.

At St. Andrew’s, worship is at the center of our life as a church family. We offer meaningful and inspirational worship each Sunday with a choir and, occasionally, a praise team.  Our service is a blend of modern and traditional worship style.   We offer something for families and folk of all ages.  The members of our “ministry team” complement each other in their preaching styles and offer uplifting and challenging messages to the congregation on a weekly basis.

Our sanctuary is large with a full balcony on three sides and has been retained in its original style of the late 19th century.  We have made appropriate changes to enable full accessibility for physical and hearing impairment.  A multi-media presentation provides an audio-visual experience in worship.

The ministry, headed by two members of session with specific responsibility in this regard, is made up of a number of individuals who are involved in its activities.

Living Christmas Tree

Beginning in 1982, the annual Living Christmas Tree production has become an institution at St. Andrew’s.  Whatever the production may be - and it is different every year - the wonder and joy of Christmas is experienced anew by all those involved and, we hope, by those who make it a part of their Christmas to attend every year.  The planning begins in late June of each year and by the time the services have been completed, many members have played some part in the process.

Volunteers are welcomed in every aspect of the production.  The choir itself is augmented by singers from other churches and communities.  Anyone who is able to carry a tune is welcome to come to the first rehearsal in September and try us out.  But there are so many other aspects to the production that there are opportunities for everyone to help with one task or another.

Music and Sound

St. Andrew’s has a faithful crew of volunteer audio-visual technicians who give faithfully of their time and talents for Sunday worship and for special services such as weddings and cantatas.  However, their efforts - as fine as they may be - are limited by the technical facilities we have and we are excited to be close to the end of several years of experimentation in how best to make the most of our sanctuary so that everyone can hear and see as well as is possible.  If you would like to be a part of this important aspect of our worship experience, please let us know through the church office at 705-324-4842.

Communion Preparation

Generally St. Andrew’s celebrates “The Lord’s Supper” on five dates: at its Good Friday service and on the first Sunday in each of March, June, October and December.  There is a team of elders which is responsible for preparing the elements, setting up the church appropriately and cleaning up following the service.

We are pleased to be able to report that many people visiting St. Andrew’s remark on the warm and welcoming presence of our ushers and pre-service greeters.  We have four teams of volunteers and, in spite of illness, holidays and weekend visits, there always seems to be a group of friendly people there when one arrives on a Sunday morning.  If anyone would be interested in becoming part of one of our ushering teams, please telephone the church at 705-324-4842 and the secretary will put you in touch with the appropriate person.
